Department of Materials and Production

Robotics and Automation

The Robotics and Automation group at the Department of Materials and Production is engaged in research on adaptive and self-learning robots and manufacturing systems.

The research of the group is focused on three topics:

  1. 1

    Laser Processing

Includes topics as: Process automation and robot control, Laser forming, Remote laser cutting and welding, Hybrid laser arc welding, Laser beam shaping, Multi axis robot control

  2. 2

    AI for Robotics and Manufacturing

Includes topics as: AI/Machine learning, Skill based programming, Human-robot collaboration/interactions, Natural Language Processing, Autonomous mobile manipulators, Computer vision & ML techniques for human-robot interaction.

  3. 3

    Smart Production

Includes topics as: Reconfigurable manufacturing systems, Advanced robotics, Digital manufacturing, Industry 4.0, Industrial standards/reference architectures, Swarm and matrix production, production preparation and implementation, industry transfer.

It is a priority of the group that the research is put into practical use. As a result, most of the research is carried out in close collaboration with industry. This can be end-users as well as system and technology providers.

Furthermore, since it is a characteristic of automation activities in manufacturing that good solutions require a multi-disciplinary approach, the group has a great emphasis on establishing close collaboration with other research groups across all faculties at Aalborg University, as well as with research institutions nationally and internationally.
